Blog 2: An influential Woman from the Francophone world
1) Marie Curie is best known as being a physicist and a chemist who changed the world with her research on radioactivity. She is the first person to win two Nobel Prizes and the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. She was born in Warsaw, Poland on Nov 7, 1867. She later died in 1934. She studied at Sorbonne where she earned a physics and mathematics degree. She was married to Pierre Curie and they had two children Irene and Eve.
2) In 1892 She and her husband discovered two new elements: polonium and radium. In 1902 they extracted a tenth of a gram of pure radium chloride salt. In 1903 Marie curie was the first woman to win a noble prize. After Pierre died she took his teaching place at Sorbonne and became the first female teacher there. She won another Nobel prize in 1911 which makes her the only person to ever win a Nobel prize in two different sciences.
3) Since she was a woman, she was barred from high education. So to rebel, she enrolled in the floating university. It was a secret university that provided education to the youth of Poland. With her many achievements, she became a role model for many female scientists who at the time were overlooked. She created a pathway for many women to follow so that they may also be successful in science.
4) I think someone to compare Marie curie to is Rosalind Franklin. She is a chemist and she provided crucial information about the structure of the human DNA

Blog 2- An Influential Woman from the Francophone World
One influential woman from the Francophone world is Marie Curie. Marie Curie was a physicist and chemist whose research won her two Nobel Prizes. She was influential to her generation by encouraging women who had interests in science to explore its various fields, during a time when women had very different societal expectations. One woman in our culture who is famous for similar reasons is Cynthia Keynon, a scientist who has also made great advances in science, only her research has led to a discovery that could possibly elongate human lives.

- Marie Curie was that first woman to win a Nobel prize, and the first person to win two Nobel prizes (In 1903 she won the Nobel prize for physics, and in 1911 she won another Nobel prize for chemistry)
- The things she accomplished is discovering two new element (radium, and polonium), and she changed the way we think about radiation
- She influenced people by being the first woman to get a Nobel prize, and being the first person to win two Nobel prizes, and her work was necessary in inventing the atomic bomb
- I think Rachel Carson is similar to Marie curie because while Marie curie changed our way of thinking about radioactive things, Rachel Carson changed our way of thinking about the environment

Marie Curie
1. Marie Curie was a famous Polish/French scientists who was known for her research on radioactivity. In 1903, she won the Nobel Prize for physics and in 1911, the Nobel Prize for chemistry.
2. Together with her husband, she discovered two new elements: Polonium and Radium. Her work contributed greatly to how radiation affects our medicine today. This can be seen by how much work she put into developing our knowledge of X-rays.
3. Her most famous work, which would be discovering Polonium and Radium, helped develop her generation's scientific prowess, and she also won 2 Nobel Prizes for her work. She also influenced future generations with her work by paving the way to discovering neutrons, artificial radioactivity, and more.
4. I believe in many ways Rosalind Franklin is similar to Marie Curie. Rosalind Franklin was known for her work in DNA, RNA, etc. She helped determine exactly how the double helix looked, and she used radiation to create an X-ray to see the strand. These two scientists truly influenced our technologies and scientific advancements today.

Joan of Arc
1. Joan of Arc is a young woman famous for her unbelievable achievements in her short life of only 19 years.
2. Joan of Arc was born right in the middle of the Hundred Years' War into a relatively poor family. When she was only 13, she started hearing voices that she claimed were from saints sent to her by God. When the news about Joan of Arc spread, the soon to be crowned king Charles VII accepted her request to bring an army to protect Orleans. She successfully protected Orleans and continued to help France by taking Charles VII to Reims, a city deep into the English territory where he was to be crowned king. After he was crowned king however, Joan of Arc was captured by Burgundian forces, and was later sold to the English. There, Joan of Arc eventually ended up dying by being burned.
3. Without Joan of Arc, the present world would be drastically different. Without her, France would be divided, and there may be no United States of America, because France also played a major contribution to the creation of the U.S.
4. I don't know much about South Korea's history but I found that a woman named Yu Gwansun was part of Korea's independence movement against Japan. She led many people in multiple peaceful protests against the Japanese government.

Joan of Arc was a famous military leader and heroine of France. She saw visions of the archangel Michael telling her to help Charles VII with the Hundred Year's War. She helped lead France to many victories and was nicknamed The Maid of Orleans. She was eventually burned at the stake by the English and canonized as a catholic saint. She still remains an extremely popular figure in French literature and media. The closest American historical figure I could find was Grace Hopper who served in the navy and helped push the American military into the digital age and helped lay the foundations for computer science.

1. Suzy Borel was a french women during the time of WW2.
2. She was the first woman diplomat in France. After two tries, she passed her exam to join the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs in 1930. Because she wasn’t able to work in any departments still reserved just for men, she could only work in select areas of the Paris offices. During World War II, Borel worked for the Resistance, and went underground when the Gestapo tried to arrest her in 1944. By the time she died in 1995, she’d received the Legion of Honor, the Croix de Guerre, the Medal of Resistance, and the Medal of Freedom.
3. Borel influenced her generation by paving a path for women to become diplomats in France. Because she was able to clear the exam, other women we encouraged to do so as well. It raised the voice of women and they became a helping hand in political and legal affairs.
4. A women from my culture who did the same kind of work was Chonira Belliappa Muthamma, who passed away in 2009. She was the first woman diplomat in India, clearing the Indian Civil Services examinations. Muthamma join the Indian Foreign Service as well and was an environmentalist side-by-side.
Marie Antoinette
Marie Antoinette was born in vienna, austria, 1755. Marie Antoinette married french king Louis XVI at a young age of 15, in 1793 Louis was beheaded and Marie Antoinette was arrested. She started to fight against the French republic, she was convicted and sent to the guillotine later in 1793.

1. Marie Curie was a French physicist and chemist who was born in Poland in 1867 and died in France in 1934. She died from aplastic anemia due to radiation, since she researched radioactivity.
2. Marie Curie won many awards by herself and with others, including two Nobel prizes (the first woman to win), one in Physics and one in Chemistry. Her and her husband discovered 2 elements, polonium and radium. She also helped with the development of X-rays.
3. Marie Curie made many useful scientific discoveries like the ones mentioned in question two that impacted the science world and let others build off her research and discover more. She changed how people understood radioactivity and how to use it in things like medicine or even the atomic bomb.
4. Marie Curie is sort of similar to Esther Lederberg, who was an American microbiologist. She discovered things like the bacterial virus (special character) (lambda phage). Though Lederberg was not a physicist or chemist, she was still a woman in science who researched things that led to a better understanding of the world (specifically genetics).

4. I don't know many physicists and chemist in my culture, so I will expand briefly on how Marie Curie and Albert Einstein (an american physicist) both had a substantial amount of influence to the world, even until today. Albert Einstein invented the refrigerator. Marie Curie studied radiation, which is a very broad category involving certain things we use everyday such as microwaves. Both of these scientists made an influence on humans' everyday life.
